In gelbem Walde die Straße sich teilte,
Und wehmütig dass ich nicht beidwärts konnt'
Ein Reisender nur, ach, wie lang' ich verweilte,
Und schaute die eine entlang, wie sie eilte,
Sich wand, und ich fragte mich ob sie wohl lohnt.
Doch nahm ich die and're, auch sie schien mir schön,
Genau wie die erste, doch edler noch,
War grasbewachsen und frisch anzuseh'n
Obschon auch auf dieser wohl viele geh'n,
Und gleichsam bereist wie die erste doch.
Und beide vom Laube bedeckt lagen da,
Das kein Schritt noch hatte niedergedrückt,
Die erste, ich ließ sie für anderntags, ja!
Doch ein Weg führt zum ander'n und Jahr folgt auf Jahr,
und ich zweifelte dass ich je käme zurück.
Einst werd' ich erzählen, und seufzen für mich,
In ferner Zeit, noch nicht erahnt,
In zwei Waldwege teilte die Straße sich,
Und den wenig bereisten, den wählte ich,
Und stets hat mein Leben mich daran gemahnt.
This came about as I gave one of the less motivated students this poem to read, as a bit of a challenge. I'd read it in 11th year, and not really loved it, but today it stuck with me all the way home, bits of a translation forming in my head, and then I spent half an hour working it out.
I'm not 100% content with it, since I used "bereist" for both "worn" and "traveled", and that doesn't really transport the meaning. The main problem is that all alternatives I can think of have more negative connotations.
And I didn't use "Der andere Weg" as a title because that would be a cliché.
